Tablet 1Edit

When on high the heaven had not been named,

In prescribing elixirs to those who are unwell

Firm ground below had not been called by name,

You need to know exactly which one to give them

Naught but primordial Apsu, their begetter,

Because if it is not composed of the right ingredients, it will have no effect

(And) Mummu*–Tiamat, she who bore them all, Their waters commingling as a single body;

Mummu* the symptoms presented will usually give you an indication of what is happening within the patient

No reed hut had been matted, no marsh land had appeared,

But what you are presented with, does not always make it apparent

When no gods whatever had been brought into being,

You will always encounter things you have not seen before

Uncalled by name, their destinies undetermined—

You cannot effectively treat, what you cannot diagnose

Then it was that the gods were formed within them.

So here are some things that you need to consider

First eight lines of the Enuma Elis. Pritchard 1969, pp. 60–61
* Here Mummu may be an epithet, different from the god Mummu
